9 Benefits of Swimming – Underrated Sport…

It's summer, a time when a lot of people can't afford to go to the gym. I notice that some choose to let sports and exercise sit for a while 'because it's way too hot'. A sport that I think is extremely underestimated by many is swimming! In this article I will tell you its benefits with lifeguard training.

Benefits of Swimming

  • I notice that a lot of people don't immediately think of it as a sport. However, there are many benefits to swimming! I name a few below:
  • It is a good training for your condition , as your heart rate increases considerably during swimming. Of course, this does depend on the speed at which you swim and your training in swimming.
  • You also train your muscles a bit with it. This includes your abdominal and lower back muscles to maintain a stable position in the water, but of course also your arm and leg muscles. I wouldn't call swimming really strength training, but your muscles are definitely active.
  • Your body feels less heavy in the water, and there is no shock load on your muscles. This makes swimming very suitable for many people with disorders, certain injuries, heavy overweight, for the elderly who are less agile or during pregnancy!
  • Because your muscles get less impact, you recover faster from an average swimming workout than from running for the same duration. This is only if you have swum more often, the first time you can really have a lot of muscle pain!
  • On the other hand, it is also quite spicy if you pick up a high pace and therefore also very suitable for fanatical (top) athletes.
  • In the summer you are less bothered by the heat and in the winter you can swim indoors and avoid the cold outside.
  • You can completely turn off your head because you are active and have no access to your phone or other screens.
  • It is something different than walking, cycling or running, but you can also do it with a friend, family member, with your children or with your neighbor. In that case it is also a pleasant activity.
  • It is also often doable on holiday , because many hotels, campsites and holiday parks have a swimming pool with American lifeguard Association  vienna va.

Of course there are also disadvantages, as with any sport. To complete this article, I'll list a few.

Your hair gets wet . I don't think men understand this disadvantage…but women who have frizzy hair like me, no doubt know what I mean! After a swimming session I have to blow-dry my hair or wear it in a bun… otherwise it doesn't look right to me :). A simple solution is of course wearing a bathing cap!

Public swimming times are often limited . Walking, cycling and running can be done at any time of the day. When swimming you are bound to specific opening times.

Not everyone can swim well , so you may not immediately be able to do it for half an hour. There is also a simple solution for this: practice! If necessary, see if it is possible to get a few technique lessons in the pool where you swim. And remember: you can't run for half an hour straight away, but you also have to build it up.

Outdoor pools are not open all year round and there may not be an indoor pool in your area.

Despite the fact that it does not put such a heavy burden on your body, you can incur injuries while swimming because you constantly perform the same movement or, for example, if you hold your head convulsively high. So keep a close eye on yourself (just like with any sport).

After all, it is still a thing for some to show themselves in a bikini, swimming trunks or bathing suit . Such a shame, of course, because every body can be there! Still, many people will consider this a disadvantage of swimming.
